Twelvemile Trail Construction Project Scoping

In 2022, SIMBA put together a proposal for 11.3 miles of new trail construction in the lower portion of the Twelvemile Creek drainage.  These proposed multi-use, non-motorized trails would connect to the existing trail network in the upper portion of the Twelvemile drainage and provide a wide range of recreational opportunities for trail users.  The Salmon-Challis National Forest will begin environmental analysis of this proposed project in 2024, and is currently seeking comments on the proposed project through 2/12/2024.  To learn more about this project and how you can provide comments to the Forest Service, visit SIMBA’s Twelvemile Project web page HERE (posted 1/10/24).

Nine-and-a-Half Hours of Disco 2024

SIMBA Trail Work Day

THIS SATURDAY on Rattlesnake Ridge Trail #085, from 9am to 3pm.  We’re looking for a few volunteers to help us give this awesome trail a little love – clearing deadfall, brushing, and some tread work.  Tools will be provided, but if you have your own, even better.  Access to the work site will be by mountain bike from the Williams Lake area, and will include a fun ride back to the vehicles at the end of the day on primitive singletrack.

Please RSVP (via Instagram, Facebook, or the link below) so that we can plan out the fine details based on the group.  If you haven’t experienced the “Double R,” this is a great chance to get to know this trail.  SIMBA will provide some goodies, but please bring food, water, work gloves, eye protection, and your bike.  If you’re not a biker but would like to participate, let us know and we will make it work.  Thank you trail volunteers! Twelvemile Group Ride

The Twelvemile trails are good-to-go! Join SIMBA for a group ride this Saturday, June 17, at 10am. We’ll explore the amazing trails, cool forests, rushing streams, and serious wildflowers that make Twelvemile an awesome place to ride. All mountain bikers welcome. 2 to 3-hour “no-drop” social ride. Bring your friends. If you’ve never ridden Twelvemile before, then definitely show up!
We’ll plan the route based on the group, but plan on at least intermediate-level singletrack. Well behaved dogs are welcome to join.
Meeting place – 10am at the dispersed camp area 2 miles up the Twelvemile Road from Highway 93, and we’ll coordinate from there. Contact us to RSVP or if you need a ride, or just show up!
Depending on time and interest, we’ll check out SIMBA’s Lower Twelvemile trail proposal after the ride. Let’s talk about trail development potential in this area – we’d like to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Nine-and-a-Half Hours of DISCO Recap

 – 95 riders in the 9.5-hour race, age 11 to 67, completing a total of 360 laps of the 10-mile course, for a total of 3600 miles ridden.

 – 13 riders in the Kids race, age 3 to 11, each completing anywhere from 5 to 12 laps of the 0.7-mile long course, for a total of more than 100 miles ridden.

It was a great weekend for reconnecting with old friends, making new friends, and celebrating mountain bikes, trails, and great dirt (and dusty dirt).  A HUGE THANKS to all of our race sponsors, our awesome crew of volunteers, and the SIMBA Board for making this this all happen.  THANKS to everybody who joined us for the race – hope to see you next year!

For Photos and Complete Results, see our DISCO RACE WEBPAGE.

Hands on the Land

Had a great time helping out with Hands on the Land and taking the 8th-graders mountain biking at Discovery Hill.  We had a few seasoned pros, a few riding singletrack for the first time, and a few that would rather have been on their dirt bikes but still thought mountain biking was “pretty cool.”  Thanks BLM and Salmon Valley Stewardship for keeping this program going!

SIMBA May 2023 Group Rides

We had an awesome group ride out on the Dump Trails a couple weeks ago.  If you missed that one, SIMBA is hosting a couple more group mountain bike rides in May.

Wed, May 17 at 5:30pm – Discovery Hill Trailhead. This is a no-drop pre-ride of the Nine-and-a-Half Hours of Disco course for anybody that is interested in getting to know the course before the race. Because of the iffy weather forecast, RSVP is required. If nobody expresses interest, we will cancel.

Sun, May 21 at 12:00pm – Wagonhammer Trailhead. Bring your tired legs after the Nine-and-a-Half Hours of Disco race for a no-drop, mellow, 2 to 3-hour ride amongst the wildflowers of Wagonhammer, which will be PRIMO this weekend. Just show up, hope to see you there!

Just 2 weeks until DISCO!!

The trails are riding great, and we are super excited to host the World’s only Nine-and-a-Half Hour Mountain Bike Endurance Race (that we know of), right here in Salmon Idaho on Saturday, May 20.  Join us for 1 lap or 10, or just join us for the party!  Are you registered yet?

Thank you Earth Day Trail Volunteers!

A huge THANK YOU to all of the awesome volunteers who joined us for the Earth Day Discovery Hill trail work day!  Altogether, we constructed about 1000 feet of new, sustainable trail that will replace the affectionately named “Trench of Doom” on the Disco Hill Trail, and the old, eroded 2-track on the Hillside Trail.  And we picked up a HUGE load of trash and old debris from the Motorcross Park!  We’d like to thank our partner in the project – the BLM Salmon Field Office – for making it all possible, as well as the Youth Employment Program for lending the tools, and Salmon Valley Stewardship for donating water bottles for our volunteers.  Look for more trail projects this summer.  If you’re interested in volunteering, please get in touch!  (Posted 4/24/23).

Fall 2022 Membership Drive

October is a great time to become a member of Salmon Idaho Mountain Bike Association (SIMBA). If this is something that you’ve been thinking about doing but haven’t gotten around to yet, it’s easy – just scroll down and click one of the ‘Join SIMBA-Become a Member!’ buttons.  Because we’re a local chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), you will then join through the IMBA website (yes, you will have to set up an account with IMBA first). Rest assured that most of your membership contributions go directly to the local chapter (SIMBA). We appreciate your support!! (posted 10/5/2022)

So here you have it… the top 5 reasons to become a member of SIMBA:

1) Bragging Rights: Be a part of an awesome community that helps take care of and rides one of the biggest trail networks around. We have a whopping 627 trails in Lemhi County (as mapped on Trailforks) – that’s 1567 miles of trail! Ok, a few of these trails might be a little faint, but still, that’s more trail miles than Ada and Blaine counties combined.
2) Some seriously great prizes: We recently re-organized as a local IMBA chapter. So, if you become a member of SIMBA during the month of October, you can enter to win some awesome prizes donated by IMBA’s sponsors (sponsors shown below). 16 packages are up for grabs with lots of cool stuff – anybody need a new hitch rack??
3) SIMBA swag: Stay tuned for more details, but all new members that join during the month of October will receive some cool SIMBA merchandise. If you already joined prior to October, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered too.
4) Support SIMBA: SIMBA is powered by volunteer efforts – without that, we would not exist. Huge thanks to all who have contributed their time and energy to the cause. However, like any organization, we have some operational costs that can’t be covered by volunteer labor. Your membership will help us continue to ramp up our efforts in trail advocacy and stewardship in Lemhi County, and bring more fun MTB events to the community.
5) Community: Membership tells a story of a community of people who are committed to local trails. In terms of trail advocacy and getting results on the ground, strength in numbers is critical. Join our community of dedicated, fun, and sometimes quirky mountain bikers, and let’s work together on your priorities. (posted 10/5/2022)

Twelvemile Project
We are now OFFICIALLY an IMBA Chapter!

SIMBA recently integrated as an International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) local chapter. This will allow us to spend more time working on the trails that we all love!

Here a just a few benefits of being an IMBA chapter:
- IMBA provides non-profit status for SIMBA, and the experience and know-how to keep everything legal.
- IMBA provides support for local projects through grants.
- IMBA supports the SIMBA Board and manages membership and accounting so that we have more time to work on local issues.
- IMBA provides national-level advocacy for big issues.

SIMBA would appreciate your membership to support trail advocacy, stewardship, and events. Click the button below, or scroll down to the bottom of this page for more information on becoming a member. (Posted May 26, 2022)

There’s a pot of gold out there somewhere…!

The Discovery Hill Trails are in great shape right now.  While you’re waiting for the high country to melt out, find a decent weather window, and GO RIDE DISCO!  As alway, PLEASE don’t ride if the trails are muddy.  But even with the rain (and snow!?) we’ve been getting, the trails have been drying out relatively quickly between storms, with plenty of hero dirt.  And flowers!   See you on the trails! (posted May 24, 2022)

Spring Flowers was a Success!

Thanks to all who attended the 2022 Spring Flowers ride.  The trails were perfect, and the weather was… at least not hot, and way better than expected!  A huge thanks to Craig at Oddfellows Bakery for donating the outdoor pizza oven, and a well deserved congratulations to this year’s Tiffanie McAllister “Be Brave” Scholarship winner – Mason Semmler!! (posted May 8, 2022)

Join us at Discovery Hill on May 7 for a fun day of singletrack sagebrush riding!

Kick off the season with some laps on a 6.6-mile loop on Discovery Hill, enjoy some great company, and help fund the Tiffanie McAllister "Be Brave" scholarship fund.

Reminder: the BLM requires clean bikes for this event to prevent the spread of weeds. Please don't show up with a dirty bike. Thanks!
